Clubs and Programs

4th & 5th Graders

This group will consist of a group of elected and volunteer students working together with an adult advisor within the framework of a constitution or bylaws to provide a means for student expression and assistance in school affairs and activities, give opportunities for student experience in leadership and encourage student / faculty / community relations. Students will campaign for all available positions. They will have to present evidence of model citizenship, global mindedness, IB learner profiles, and strong academic effort.

3rd - 5th Graders

Chorus is open to third through fifth graders through an application process,  which requires a letter of reference from a previous teacher at Sarah Smith.  Special events throughout the year (Macy's Chorus, Spring Musical, Star-Spangled Banner, etc) may require an individual audition.  Students will be prepared for the audition in class and given appropriate dates and times well in advance. Chorus meets every Monday from 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm, with extended time during the musical production.  

4th & 5th Grades

The SRS Debate Team provides students with the opportunity to improve their academic performance by having an avenue through which to challenge themselves in terms of literacy, critical thinking, communication skills, and decision--making skills. By participating in debate, students gain knowledge and practice skills that will better equip them for their future lives inside and outside the world of academia. The team meets once a week after school. Students complete an application process which includes writing a persuasive essay for a debate prompt. Applications are reviewed and students are selected based on their level of competency for debate. Parents should be willing to serve as a judge for one of the debate competitions throughout the school year. 

3rd - 5th Graders

Girls meet twice a week to learn about life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. At each season's conclusion, the girls complete a 5K running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result--making the seemingly impossible, possible, and teaching girls that they can. Girls in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade sign up for a lottery, through the Girls on the Run website, in August and January. There are 15 spots for each season. 

4th & 5th Graders

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Smith and other schools in APS and surrounding school districts. Students are selected for the team based on their Accelerated Reader Points from the previous school year, participation during their fourth grade year, classroom/school--wide behavior, enthusiasm towards reading and the ability to read an extensive collection of books within a set amount of time.

4th & 5th Graders

The SRS News Team is a school leadership opportunity that allows students to communicate creatively and express themselves daily on the school's morning broadcast. We seek students who consistently exhibit the characteristics of an IB learner, show excellent communication skills, and exude personality. Students use a variety of tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate for their daily goals. An application process is completed at the end of the school year. Students are interviewed and selected to participate on the team based on their skills, knowledge, and recommendations from teachers. Excellent communication skills and some knowledge of video editing is preferred. 

3rd - 5th Graders

Smith on Stage sponsors an annual Musical Theatre Show or Musical Revue. An audition is required for all students interested in participating in this production. Auditions are held before the holiday break usually in December. The production will be in late spring and rehearsals begin in early January. The schedule is put together according to scenes.  You must attend only when your scenes / songs are rehearsed. A normal rehearsal week includes Vocals on Monday, Choreography on Tuesday, Stage Direction on Wednesday. Thursdays will be scheduled as needed throughout the production. Students will be given a song to prepare for the audition. Three songs will be on an approved list. The song will be performed for a panel of judges (see directors / sponsors). The song (excerpt) must performed with the provided sound track. Students are adjudicated on tone quality, pitch, rhythm, breath support and management, stage presence, and overall performance. Students may also be asked to do a "cold" reading from the production. In other words, you will not know what the reading will be until you are asked to read your part and interact with another actor. Parents are expected to serve as volunteers for the production.

3rd - 5th Graders

The Technology Competition is for students to showcase their interest in technology and utilize their technology skills to create a technology project to enter into the local school Tech Tourney. Students have the opportunity to advance to the district and state level. Students enter a technology project of choice to be judged in the school competition and participate in a 4 week prep-course to enhance their technology and presentation skills for the next levels of the competition.
